Gecko VM now gone

With some brief free time on my hands, I decided to launch my Gecko VM to add a few packages to further configure it. Sadly, I was unable to open YaST2 to add anything at all. And not being familiar with all the zypper commands, that left me unable to do anything more with Gecko.

Since I posted a somewhat positive message about Gecko when I first created that VM (out of curiosity), I thought it only fair to follow-up with my most recent Gecko adventure.

joluveba I've run both openSUSE Tumbleweed Budgie and Gecko Tumbleweed Budgie in Gnome Boxes. I agree that openSUSE is a bloated monster (4.5 GB ISO) and Gecko more manageable (1.7 GB ISO), but (in each case) the Budgie desktop is outdated and not even close to the standard set by Solus Budgie. I understand that this issue is related to repository issues and the Buddies of Budgie is working toward bringing Budgie up to speed across distros.

@joluveba and @WetGeek YaST might be the greatest thing since sliced bread (its adherents are even more adamant than Arch true believers), but, like you, I had real trouble getting YaST to do the simplest things. Another real issue for me with both openSUSE Tumbleweed and Gecko Tumbleweed is that updating is an all-or-nothing proposition -- both update the entire installation rather than updating packages that have been updated since the last update. That might enhance stability, but it means that updating takes a long, long, time, particularly in the case of openSUSE.

I tried Gecko Linux Rolling once, and didn't have a good experience. For starters, I couldn't find the way to update the system on Yast. I admit my Linux skills rather low, but I have used other rolling distros (Manjaro, Antergos, PCLinuxOS) and updating them was very very easy. Since I couldn't make heads or tails of Yast, I decided to use the terminal instead. I entered the Zypper update command on Konsole, restarted the computer, and it didn't boot anymore. I decided I had had enough, and that was the end of my story with Gecko.

If I had to say something good about Gecko Linux, is that the ISO was light and was not bloated with packages I will never use, unlike Opensuse, which is very bloated.

I used to believe that, as I used openSUSE for many years and got to know YaST very well. I especially appreciated that I could enter my password just once, and do all kinds of system maintenance and software installation without entering it again.

There was bloat, though. That was a real thing.

I thought I was the only one! Yast looked totally arcane to me. When I used Antergos, using Pamac, or even pacman commands, was as easy as using the Solus-sc or eopkg, really.

Is there an easy way to update Gecko Linux using Yast? I'm not leaving Solus for Gecko, but I'm curious, the update button must be hidden somewhere.

Regarding sol, I don't know what to think. Sol is supposed to be better if we ever get it, but I'm quite happy with eopkg, I can't really say anything bad about it.

I don't know where you got that impression. Here's the update selection from the Package menu:

Not only can you update only if there's a newer version, or update unconditionally, but you can also select to do either of those with just those packages that you've selected into the list at the right.

This screen capture is from Tumbleweed, because I've already removed Gecko, and I couldn't get into YaST there, anyway.

NOTE: I couldn't actually upgrade anything right now, because the .ISO I used was released yesterday.

When it's working, it's not difficult, and you can start an update from the menu. My problem was that -- in Gecko -- I couldn't even launch the software function of YaST. It's such an important part of openSUSE that I could no longer do much of anything with Gecko.
