Okay, I'll bite. How do you measure light years? I thought it was just the distance that light would travel in a year, based on the "speed of light", whatever that is ...

tomscharbach oh, there's no revelation. it was 'the intensity...over a measured distance' that struck me as basically the same (right or wrong). I saw the parallel and ran with it hastily? maybe. the time/distance light travels has to do with intensity I believe---as its measured.

I think I understand. Distant objects (stars, galaxies, whatever) are intensely bright up close but perceived brightness gets dimmer and dimmer over a million light years here, a million light years there. What I can't wrap my head around is how scientists figure out how far away an object is, because it would seem that an assumption would have to be made about the up-close brightness in order to make the calculation. But my total sum of knowledge comes from watching NOVA.

elfprince I gotcha. I read recently that after the acquisition many Lenovo's still used branded IBM parts in the internals/board well into the 00's. If you believe Wikipedia, then they (and other key computer hardware makers) still use IBM parts today.
It changed hands in 2005 so your T60 makes sense. I had thinkcentre boxes from '04, '06, and 09 but they were branded lenovo.

I can't figure stuff out either and my habit as of late is not to believe out-of-hand without scouring. But it is a math-governed profession (astronomy) so I believe in the math even though the distance of a star emitting light from a distant galaxy can only be an estimate, however competent.

Antoine Both Intel Wifi so it should work well (unless your router sucks or the notebook has poor antenna or something).
I don't know about Nvidia GPUs though. I had one 5 years ago and Prime didn't work well for me. But maybe today it's better. Sure others know.

See if there is an option to buy it with ubuntu or fedora. If so, it should be okay for Solus. e.g. The X1 Carbon offers Fedora and Ubuntu. I think the g15 offers ubuntu. As for the wireless card in the ideapad, I would see if it is the same one in the X1 carbon or one of the other supported laptops.

@Antoine As @kaktuspalme pointed out, both computers use Intel CPUs and Intel wifi adapters -- Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX201 (Dell), Intel® WiFi 6 (802.11 ax) (Lenovo) -- so you are okay. I don't see anything in the specifications of either computer that concern me.

I suggest that you update your BIOS and any other firmware before installing Linux. If you decide on the Dell, you can update via the Dell support page, which will identify your computer and guide you through the update process. I assume Lenovo has a similar support page for firmware updates.

It depends on French law. But it might be good to have Windows installed because (1) you will be able to update your computer's firmware easily before you install Solus, and (2) the computer will be licensed for Windows if you decide to pass it on to someone else in the future.

Whether you activate the Windows license, and/or update BIOS and other firmware, before wiping the computer is entirely up to you, of course. Your computer, your choice.
