(Although that last bit about a kernel panic, I haven't seen. Maybe you should try a different USB/USB port?)
Unfortunately I haven't yet figured out what is going on, but the main point is, after messing around with BIOS settings and rebooting a number of times, I was able to get things working a few times. I also used dd to write the usb.
I usually disable fast boot in BIOS too, when messing with these things.
Do you hear any login chime sounds when you get to the blank screen? Is the blank screen after the usual boot log text scrolls by, or does it never get that far?
