Of course. That's a common Linux feature, but different desktop environments expose them in different ways. If you let us know which DE you're using, we can help more. Budgie, Plasma GNOME or MATE?

Right-click on the empty spot of the background, and select Budgie Desktop Settings.

From this dialog, click on Bottom Panel, which opens this page.

Using the Add Applet link, select Workspace Switcher and add that applet to the bottom panel. It will default to the center position, as it shows in this example. If I remember right, it defaults to four workspaces, but you can easily add more, up to eight workspaces in total.

I managed to do it but is there a way to hide this doesn't look the best and like the bottom panel fairly empty.

In the image above, note that there's an "Add" button visibility setting that offers several options. Select the one you want.

To assign your shortcuts for workspaces go to:

Settings > Keyboard > View and Customize Shortcuts > Navigation:

There, you set up shortcuts for up to four workspaces. If you want to add shortcuts for more workspaces search on this topic: Workspace Keyboard Shortcuts in Budgie

Yes, the default is Crtl+Alt+arrow keys. But you can change it.

I've noticed that some have assigned those actions to keys, but that's something I've never tried. Never needed to do that, since the desktop icons are always visible, unlike in Windows. Just a mouse click selects whatever workspace you want, so I've never looked for a more complicated way to do it.

Perhaps someone else will join this thread, and explain how to assign actions to keys.

Yeah, Windows 10 and probably Windows 11 do. I'm not sure about earlier versions. I no longer remember the steps I took, but I created 5 virtual workspaces on Windows 10, just in case I needed them. I never used more than two, for the Nook app and the Ring doorbell app, which were only available for Windows and Android, not Linux.

Since Ring discontinued their Windows support, I could get rid of the multiple workspaces now and just use the main Windows workspace to read my Nook books. It's probably more trouble than it's worth, though.

I'm fairly sure the same feature is build into Windows 11, but they're heavily promoting Azure now, so maybe not.

EDIT: Allthough I don't remember how to set them up in Windows, I do remember that you can cycle through the desktops with Ctrl+Windows and the Left and Right arrow keys. The workspaces don't show up anywhere, so the only way to know for sure which one you're on is to cycle all the way to the left or right and count them as you go. Nowhere near as convenient on Linux.

No idea why, but they absolutely did that. The Windows version of their app was amateurish, and not very responsive, but it did display a full-size HD image on my laptop. The Android version is much more professional, but the tiny screen leaves a lot to be desired.

If I had to guess, I'd figure that supporting the Windows version wasn't commensurate with the number of users. A lot of people live by their phones.

WetGeek thanks for indulging me...abandoning desktop (heck even remote desktop) users when the majority use their smartphones doesnt seem wise to me but like you said it probably helps their bottom line.
I think they should have developed it more because "it did display a full-size HD image on my laptop" seems a good thing.

brent I think it's it's way easier to record from a desktop, meaning you don't need to pay their subscription cost.

A lot of IP cameras are doing away with desktop support, some I've seen announce that alongside (or at least very shortly after) new subscription plans so they're not exactly being subtle about it.

Yeah, and easier to use. To create some, you just click the icon (third from the left) that consists of black and white overlapping squares.

That's actually the same as in Windows 10, but a different task manager icon there.

Hovering the mouse on that icon displays all the available desktops and a small image of their contents. Here the only one with anything but a background is the one with my Nook book.

Thanks for helping clear that up. Watching the YouTube videos, I remembered how I created the workspaces in Windows 10. 😄

CT42 I don't have ring but many people I know do. Seems to create addictive behavior in some but what digital things don't I guess.. When a car goes by their house, or a breeze, or a cat, or a package delivery it triggers a digital Pavlovian smart phone bell and they drop everything even if they are at work. 87 false positives a day and wasting their employers or their own time.
...viewing/recording shenanigans on a desktop screen however seems cool as heck: big screen in real time🙂.
