Resume from Hibernation!

I was running dual boot with Win10 and Solus and i had two EFI partitions one original 100Mb and the other 512Mb for Solus.

The Bootloader (CLR?) had only Solus in it and if i wanted to load into windows i had to go into bios or press some keykombo option for win10 to show up.

My problem was when i hibernated in win10 the pc when resuming would still resume into Solus if i didnt catch it.
With Grub it usually resumed to the last active OS but with Solus it seemes different and im wondering.. Could this have been cause of two EFI partitions? Or in plain english how would Solus handle that situation when resuming from hibernate and bot bootloaders are in the same EFI partition - would it resume to the last active OS or would i have to catch it and boot into Windows etc?

Err... when a computers hibernates, it should return were it was.
If you shut it down (or if it ran out of battery while it was hibernating), it will be a normal boot and it will boot on the default bootloader defined in your BIOS(UEFI) unless you press the key that displays the EFI boot menu and select something else.

kyrios hmm strange! i cant show you since i removed my install in preperation for this weekend, i will backup the shit out of everything and then try this magic move EFI thing! and see what happens 🙂

I have finally done the reinstalling with a bigger main EFI partition and it works pretty great after some headaches during install, mainly related to the install not installing the Linux Boot Manager but i had to do that manually i made sure that the install was UEFI with:

ls /sys/firmware/efi

Anyways when i boot i get the option to boot into either Windows, Solus or Firmware via what i guess is the clr-boot-manager. Now as i said earlier when im in Win10 and it hibernates i then turn on my PC it still defaults to boot into Solus and from my understanding that is kind of dangerous! If you mount the Windows partition and changes that partitions files (correct me if im wrong) creating some kind of mismatch with what Win10 has in its memory and what its presented with can cause a boot failure..

So to my question; can i somehow make whatever OS i ran last/hibernated be the default one in the boot manager?

No, your computer doesn't know which hibernated last.

Also if Windows is hibernated Solus will mount your Windows partition read-only for this reason.

[deleted] Note, if you want to be able to mount your Windows partitions from Solus, you'll likely have better results by disabling Window Fast Startup. Fast Startup prevents the complete unmounting of disks. https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-windows-10-fast-startup

Justin Alrighty! Its a little shame cause its a nice feature; reboot go away get coffee etc and youre back all booted up where you where, be it Windows or Solus! - Still this is not a deal breaker for me!

[deleted] There may be a way clr-boot-manger could assist with this if it is being used to boot both OSs. Best to raise it upstream to see if it can be implemented.

We actually have plans on moving away from clr-boot-manager and are assessing solely using systemd-boot UEFI support.

Regardless, clr-boot-manager is not being used to boot both. Windows has its own boot loader via bootmgr and bootmgfw.efi.

I add the EFI stubs from Windows to my Solus ESP so it shows up as an option, then goes off to it's own.
