Solus has the best Mate theming of all I tried. Actually it looks better than most of lightweight options out there and better than any Windows. It's clean and fast on a potato. I got over 10 years old office grade HP550 laptop with Core2duo 1.4Ghz, 4GB of RAM, ancient Intel GMA X3100 GPU (it's like a hay cart of integrated GPUs), cheap AData 120 GB SSD and it works just fine. It's good if you like classic desktop and don't need cool gadgets, widgets like in GNOME, Budgie, Deepin, Cinnamon etc. It doesn't go crazy on GPU so it won't interfere with video streaming and gaming on crappy integrated chips. I wouldn't use Budgie on any integrated GPU that can't play PS3 era games at 30fps. I tried it on my HP550 and it couldn't play YouTube videos.
