Apps never worked for me. Too cumbersome. I can see the pro of getting stuff added together over time easier, but other than that I don't see the benefit.
I track expenses analogue in my bullet journal (if you don't know what a bullet journal is, check it out, the guy who came up with it should get the noble prize or something). One page I split between my income broken down from the source its coming from. On the other half of that page I have categories like rent, food, transportation, technology, investments, savings and so forth. Then on the next page I have columns for date, sum, what, category. As the month go I write what I bought at what date and which category it belongs to. By the end of the month I add the sum for each category together and write them down on the first split page. Using cash and saved receipts as much as possible over abstract card transactions is the key to make it easy imo (easier to spend less money with cash and keep on track too).
