Although I played in orchestras for decades, I've never played an instrument in the violin family. Unless you consider a mandolin as such. When I was working for an aerospace company on a year contract, I was thousands of miles away from home, and wanted something to amuse myself. I was also a big fan of "Mandolin Wind," by Rod Stewart, and I bought one, intending to learn to play it. I already played guitar, so I had some idea what I was doing.
My primary instrument is the horn. After the contract ended and I returned home, I was kept pretty busy with practicing, playing in my hometown orchestra and my main job, which was software development. I eventually gave the mandolin to my son's wife. I'd always believed that if I ever did learn to play a type of violin, it would probably be a cello. To me, it sounds the most horn-like, at least in its range, if not timbre.
Thanks for posting that video. Just guessing, but I'll bet her instruments probably sell for more than my car.
