Question about sound amplification

Hello, great to be a part of this Solus journey. Hoping I can go from noob, to someone useful in the future. For now, I'm trying to disable audio from going above 100% and can't seem to figure out a way to do that. I've searched the forums and the internet, but can only come across ubuntu specific fixes.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm extremely new to Linux as a whole, but willing to get my hands as dirty as needed. I'm using the latest Budgie release if that's useful.

In your system settings in the menu, there's a selection like this for sound settings:

As you can see, the 100% mark is easy to pick out. If I remember right, it defaults to 100% and won't go above that unless you change it there. It's been a while since I've used the Budgie desktop experience, and while I did, I never had a reason to change this setting. But I'm pretty sure it works the same as it does on Plasma, which I've been using for a while now.

WetGeek I think I see my issue, but not sure how to fix it. I don't change the volume through the system volume control. I use my keyboards function key to change the volume, and this allows it to move past the 100% threshold. However when I use the panel, this is limited to the set 100%.

Do you know of a way to prevent the keyboard from going past? I'm aware I could just change my habits, but I'm interested in actually fixing the problem.

Solarmass From what picklepopper1 said, they're using the keyboard function keys to change the volume. I just tested on my own setup, and even with Allow raising volume above 100% disabled, the function keys can still raise the volume above the threshold. Seems like the option in the settings only monitors the GUI ways to change volume. And I don't know if this is by design, an oversight or whether there are technical reasons that limit the possibility of modifying function keys presses outcome.

Solarmass Ok. It seems I had a weird configuration. My Solus installation is old (since even before the 100% volume cap was introduced I think), and I'd never played with sound settings. I would guess when the volume cap option was first added, the option was off by default but it also didn't mess with my legacy configuration. And that lead to a weird state were I had the option toggled off, but I could still see the 100% limit in the sound settings.

I just tried toggling the option on and off, and it seems to have made my configuration coherent again. Thanks for pointing it out to me 😆

Solarmass Wow, that was weird. It was off (which I'm assuming is the default setting.) and I toggled it on/off and the settings application got rid of the over 100% from the slider. I guess I can chalk it up to a weird glitch.

For anyone in the future, do exactly what Solarmass suggested. Even if your toggle is already showing off: turn it on, and then back off again to fix this issue.
