Terminal shows "bash-5.1" instead of my username and machine name

Not sure what happened but the terminal just shows "bash-5.1" instead of my username and machine name.

I had a different Linux os installed and reused the partitions. I formatted the root partition and boot partition before installing solus. Reused the home partition.

The whoami command yields my username from the home partition. So that's not the issue.

This is why you do not do that 😛 Home partitions are not entirely portable between distros and can lead to problems like this.

I assume this issue is due to ~/.profile and/or ~/.bashrc not existing or being different

They should contain at least this line:
source /usr/share/defaults/etc/profile

Harvey Yeah before installing solus I went into the home partition and deleted all hidden folders, so all that was left was documents, pics, etc. I assumed solus installer would have replaced the hidden folders (.config, .local, etc) as necessary during install.

Yes, both of those files are missing. What else should be in them? I'd like to make them include everything that a solus install would typically generate. Still unsure why they weren't installed with the OS

EDIT: adding that line to both empty (new) files, fixed the issue! Still curious what else should be in those files. Thanks for the help.

Nothing by default. .bashrc is where you would add aliases if you created any etc

/home/ is the domain of the user. The package manager will never touch /home/ I am unaware of any distro that would allow this to occur. (Edit: technically I guess snap packages are installed to ~/snap/ but you won't find a package in a normal repository that installs to /home/ its a really bad idea)

Any config files and folders in /home/ are not installed, they are generated when you login / launch the app / make a setting change. Same thing happens if you create a new user. I know a user accidentally deleted those files before an they do not get regenerated. I assume that it is a part the user account creation process and if the /home/username directory already exists it never gets created for that user.
