Would it even be plausible to try to hack something like this together with OpenRC or the like? Just curious.

By that point you'd be better off using a different OS altogether because systemd is an integrated part of Solus and utilized all over the place.

As Staudey has stated, there are some Linux distros that do not use SystemD. Just use your favored search engine and the search term linux no systemd. Here's a good starting place.

Thanks for the comments all. I was just curious because I've come into contact with more distros that use alternatives to systemd lately. I find that every time I try something other than Solus, it never quite fits what I need. I fear (and delight) that Solus is my distro for the long haul; I'm just curious about alternatives to systemd.

I think the simplest solution is to use a distrubtion like voidlinux
