Would it even be plausible to try to hack something like this together with OpenRC or the like? Just curious.
Systemd-less Solus?
No. systemd is not just an init system. Additionally Josh has said they have no interest in making such a change.

By that point you'd be better off using a different OS altogether because systemd is an integrated part of Solus and utilized all over the place.
Thanks for the comments all. I was just curious because I've come into contact with more distros that use alternatives to systemd lately. I find that every time I try something other than Solus, it never quite fits what I need. I fear (and delight) that Solus is my distro for the long haul; I'm just curious about alternatives to systemd.
I think the simplest solution is to use a distrubtion like voidlinux
