How to take screenshot of window only?

Something I noticed about the Screenshot feature in Solus is that it includes stuff in the vicinity. In other distros I tried, the window screenshot feature only snips the window on a transparent background. Is that possible to do in Solus? I'm only interested in taking a screenshot of the window in question.

TskTskUgh set the timer a few seconds, select "select area to grab", and with patience and precision you get your wish...

...voila no stuff in the vicinity

TskTskUgh you can try budgie-screenshot-applet By using below command

sudo eopkg it budgie-screenshot-applet

And then restarting your pc to see the applet o in budgie desktop settings , it is highly customizable with built in timer and Screen, Window and selection mode... 🙂

This is the result of it using client-side decorations (e.g. the headerbar) and "shadows". The app draws them.

This isn't necessary. You can just restart the panel:

budgie-panel --replace &!

Then Ctrl+D. Or log out then log back in, no need for a full system restart.

For some reason I have always thought Solus budgie supported ALT + Print Screen to capture a window only, is this not the case?

the answer to your question is this: it's supported in Budgie, but you have to take the initiative to activate it.

It doesn't matter if we had it or not, it would still capture the client-side decorations and any "shadows" (even if invisible): https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/1110

The shell requests an unclipped window image, and the returned surface indeed includes the additional space to account for the shadows.
It's invisible though, and that's a mutter issue.

It's not transparent, it's window shadow. GNOME Shell adds it, that's by design.

While we're not GNOME Shell, we still use Mutter and GTK and the applications are responsible for rendering the shadows themselves and that gets pushed to the compositor for rendering, even if it's a transparent border.

As far as I'm aware there is no clean way to get window screenshots without a shadow, since they're rendered by apps themselves. If that were to change I'd not be against an option to enable/disable shadows, but AFAIK that'd be very difficult.

brent it's supported in Budgie, but you have to take the initiative to activate it.

I didn't activate anything, it works out of the box:
