no audio through speakers

i can't get audio through my speakers

$ inxi -A

--your best-case scenario would be some kind of easy-to-fix hardware issue...

but once you throw in the usb-to-hdmi cord, and alsa...
in fact, I used the search function above and typed in 'alsa hdmi'.

sound seems to be working now after a number of updates to the system

the worst kind of resolution as the root problem remains unknown

oh well at least it works
