Hi all
Returning to Solus after a long hiatus (been looking through another ‘window’ I guess). I recently pulled the pin on my trusty old MediaPC (Plex) to migrate it across to an Linux distro. For the last few months I have been running Linux Mint (20/Ulyana/Cin).It has been working reasonably well, but for one key issue noting my MediaPC, the 7.1 surround sound/stereo staging into my Pioneer SC-LX81 AV Amp has been difficult to get right. I hate the idea of having to change settings around, it should be the same irrespective of the audio file. So I have just completed a very extensive ISO install on following Distros, Zorin, AV Linux, Elemental, Sparky, Ubuntu, Apodio, and Solus, with varying amounts of success. The main criteria from the OS is to support Plex and have excellent audio reproduction for SACD/FLAC/DSD/DSF/DTS files and ISO file support (that is still work in progress), and have the normal desktop interface (Kodi is a not an option for me)
So what has Solus got that the other distros don’t? The clean look, fast boot, and the surround sound staging / audio placement that cannot be faulted, well done to the DEV’s. I will confess I am not a config manipulation kind of user, I just want it to work, and fully aware that ALSA/Pulse/Gstreamer backend is key to make it work!
So what have I found supports .DSF and DSD files – DeadBeeF & Strawberry
FYI Foobar/Wine is a deal breaker as that only supports 5.1
Intel i5 3rd gen
4GB memory
GT740 GPU
7.1 Intel HD Audio
1 TB hard drive & many others!
