Default Web Browser

Hi,
I have installed the Brave browser, all works fine except every time it starts it asks to become the default browser, clicking the button does nothing. If I go to 'Other/Settings/Default Applications' Firefox is there, but Brave isn't in the list. Even if I uninstall Firefox, Brave still doesn't show in the list.
Is there a configuration file where I can set the default browser?

Chris_W I just installed Brave from the software center and it shows up under my default applications. Did anything unusual happen when you installed ?

Nothing unusual, I installed it like you, from the software centre. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it three times, once from the command line sudo eopkg it brave still the same problem.

I have to say though, apart from this problem, I'm loving this OS. Changed over a few days ago after years of using Mint.

Try this xdg-settings set default-web-browser brave-browser.desktop. It's a bit strange because I can also choose graphically.

For some reason it thinks it should be 'brave-browser-stable' in /usr/bin, but /usr/bin just contains 'brave-browser'

Chris_W Seems like we explicitly change it from brave-browser-stable during the package setup, which then probably causes this issue when trying to set it as default.

@Jacalz Is there a particular reason why this string is replaced, or is it just for aesthetics?

Okay: Edited 'brave-browser.desktop' and removed '-stable' from the URL, and now it works. Why it was suffixed with '-stable' I don't know.

It might be worth posting this possible fix on GitHub, as there are some on there still having the same problem, even though it's marked as fixed.

It is replaced because we don’t have anything else than stable brave and because it might be unclear to the user that they need to type”brave-browser-stable” to launch it. But if it is starting to causes issues, I guess we could switch back 🙂
