Brother DCP-135C won't scan.

Hi all,

I see that the above mentioned printer is listed as working.
It was easy to get the printing part running but if refuses to scan.

I have installed Sane, but I see that only brscan4 is in the repo.

I had the scanner working under other distributions and have always needed brscan2.
Did anyone else get the scanning department up and running?

Just curious ... in order to scan something, one would think you'd need to be physically AT the machine to load the subject document onto the scan/copy glass. While you're standing there, can't you trigger the scan from the machine? Does THAT fail too, or does it work when you start it that way?

I'm not suggestion that you should not be able to start a scan from remote. I'm just wondering if it's worth any more trouble, since you need to be at the machine anyway.

I have an HP all-in-one that I use for scanning stuff, but I've never even looked for a way to start a scan from remote. I never felt the need to make it more complicated than just touching the "Scan" icon on the printer's display.

Be weird if what's in brscan2 is NOT in brscan4...I thought these all aggregate scanner drivers. I could be mistaken.
And you installed the dcp-135c printer drivers from repo? (I'm assuming yes).

So sane and brscan4 and reboot and no scanner. What you trying to scan with? simple-scan? gscan2pdf? you didn;t put the brother software on solus did you? (I never know that one could).
Brother does have dcp-135 scanner drivers here for linux. might have to crack a .deb open and experiment?
or try to find your own brscan2 pack somewhere?
scanners are rough--it's all eliminating variables

WetGeek triggering the sensor--I'd call that a most important variable, and eliminate from there. If it works forget everything else. If it doesn't then at least a starting point

Yeah, I searched for a picture of the thing. There's a [Scan] button on the main panel. If pressing that starts a scan, I'd forget about making it more complex. If it doesn't start a scan, then no software is gonna help anyway.

Hi all,

The scanner works fine when pushing the button on the machine and the scanner also works when a different
HDD is attached with Arch on it.
I had another brscan installed earlier on Arch and that did not work either, don't remember which one exactly, brscan3 or 4.
Brscan2 was needed and worked.

I have installed the printer driver from the Solus repo and tried simple-scan to scan.

If I scan with the button on the machine how would I get the scan on my pc?

I was wondering if your printer is like mine, with a USB port. I use a USB flash drive as the destination for scans, and I can insert that into any computer where I want it, after the scanned PDF file is on the USB drive.

There must be a way to tell the scanner where to put the result of a scan, or there wouldn't be any reason to have a [Scan] button on the device. If you use that button to start a scan, does the display not ask you where you want to put the result? Is USB one of the choices?

I'm not suggesting that you give up your search for brscan2, but only suggesting another idea that may help you until you can implement your preferred method. Usually when I scan something, it's because I need it right now.

I would think brscan packages would be backward comp I did see this printer did require brscan2 to function would think it would be in brscan4 could be wrong. Scan buttons only work over network on brothers are hard to setup. I would check the config file for brscan and make sure it knows where to find your scanner maybe it didnt get setup right. (Not the network)

No, only brscan2 works.
Brother offers a .deb and a .rpm setup file that works fine on debian and rpm distro's.

For now a scan residing on a usb stick works fine, so I stick to that I think.
Don't scan every day. 😄

Axios thank you, I was wrong. Instead of brother scanner drivers culminating in these sequenced packs, instead the packs are printer/scanner-specific? We don't offer all brscan versions in repo. Maybe it's a matter of non-maintained/deprecated brscan packages? I don't know why, either, but no doubt developer reasons are sound.

From software center blurb "Brscan4 provides a variety of scanning drivers for various Brother scanners and multi-function printers. Note that some portions are binary and provided for hardware enablement so may not meet typical Solus packaging standards for paths." (emphasis mine).

You gotta do yr homework but there are ways of working with particular.deb files in Solus. If you don't scan that much, as you say, then no headaches🙂. I know there is a way to make to your scanner work. We haven't found it yet.

Just found this! One issue that confuses a lot of users is the difference between brscan, brscan2, brscan3, brscan4 and brscan5. Each of these tools supports a different set of scanners, and you need to download the appropriate package for your scanner. Because it is possible to install many different scanners, you need to run the proper version of the brsaneconfig tool. If your scanner is supported by the brscan3 tool, you will need to run the brsaneconfig3 tool to configure it. Can we download different drivers for solus if needed If the above is correct? Maybe one developers can reply or am I really confused..haha If solus keeps current what do we do if we need an older driver? trying wrap my head around it.

Kindred What I mean is at brother they offer 3 different dcp135 scanner packages, a scanner driver key, the scanner driver installer, and the scanner driver. Ultimately, if you extract all three packs you see some tar.gz packs. All I was saying is I wonder if some of the tar.gz can be compiled and installed, as in MAKE/, etc. But I can't tell if all three packages are necessary or only one. Conversely, could you find a deb of brscan2 and install it similarly into Solus.
Not saying I could🙂 but scanners are a pain.
There was also a recent post here about solving all this via the "online cups" method as well. I've never tried that one.

I think I have to reinstall anyway, updating doesn't work okay, the process stops after a while, even in a terminal I have
to start it over a few times, because I am getting a server timeout.
And I am unable to add starters on my panel.

Ow, and I checked the sha256sum just now and it did not match at all!

I'm reading a few stories (don't know why, but I saw your reply so thought I'd surf again) about compiling source brscan2 tar.gz from brother and compilation instructions and many DIY workarounds (albeit for different distros). Also tools like rpm installer (we have this in repo) as a way. I fully believe you can run a fully functional dcp135c in Solus, just a couple headaches away as all scanner business is.

Not seen the downloader page poop out like that too many times in a row. Maybe one of those days. edit/spell

Brscan3 wont work, I think I'll stick to using the button.
It is an old printer so I'm happy that it runs anyway.

BTW, Arch still has brscan2 in the repo and I see that it uses the .rpm file.

If you are not afraid I found it brscan2. Just unpack and move it to the right place.
