Hello. I've been trying Solus for the first time under VMs and I've had an overall fantastic experience.
To have the full Solus experience I decided to install the Budgie DE (which I already tried before under Arch and Ubuntu and really liked) version of Solus 4.1 on my laptop I use for various distro testing things (now it has openSUSE Tumbleweed and Fedora 32).
I dd'd the ISO to a USB stick and plopped it in the laptop. I already made an 80G ext4 partition for Solus as I have all of them of this size (to accomodate for more distros). I went through the installer and chose the option which lets you reuse old partitions and give them mountpoints (the selection of mountpoints is quite slim imo. there should at least be the option to have /usr and /var or outright custom mountpoints but w/e it's not integral to the discussion) and gave that partition the root. I already had a 1G ESP which it picked up without a problem.
The installer was going fine until it got me a Errno 5: Input/Output error The install failed and modifications were made to disk or something along those lines.
I tried multiple things like telling it to resize another partition (it picked up my fedora install), doing the "make a second ESP and take out the flags of the first one" method, tried on another laptop (including nuking the harddisk and giving it all to Solus) but it still. wouldn't. budge (pun not intended).
I then decided (as a primarily Plasma 5 user) to install the KDE edition on the other laptop and guess what? No issues whatsoever. The install went smooth as butter as intended.
The weird thing is that the SAME ISO (which I redownloaded just to be sure) worked outright fine under Virtualbox, both in UEFI and in BIOS mode.
Does anyone know why this might be happening? Any fixes?
Thanks.
