Sudden, Inexplicable, Lock-up on Login.

So, I have a pretty clean installation of Solus 4 on a machine with all new hardware. Everything is going fine, then today on boot I am offered a choice between 2 different versions of Solus 4.1. Confused, but acknowledging my ignorance and unfamiliarity, I choose the slightly newer version. I login, but notice that I have no audio. When I restart, the system appears to freeze only after I attempt to login. My keyboard seems unrecognized and my mouse cursor does not respond. Even the text cursor in the login stops blinking. By holding ctrl+alt+F1 I can get away from the login screen, but can still not enter any text.

Everything was perfect a day ago. I was fully updated. Since my last boot I have not updated, downloaded, installed, or otherwise altered my system in anyway. I do use a firewall. I am using the default gnome interface. Restarting leads down the same road, and I am no longer prompted to select between versions.

Help please. I am a complete beginner and have no real ability to troubleshoot Linux.

The problems I had were insurmountable to me, so I decided to get into TTY, create a backup of my home directory, then just nuke and pave my system. I replaced my home with the backup and everything was fine. Ultimately, there was an issue with my DE that I had messed up in some places I shouldn't have been messing with. I know this isn't the case with you, but perhaps you ran an update that may of broken your system. I also recommend taking a look at this article in our help section:

This article has helped me in the past to restore my system to a place before I had installed a problem package. Hope that one of these paths can help you.

EDIT:
So I went away after adding this comment then reread that your keyboard cannot send any input. None of these methods will help without a keyboard! Sorry about that. I'm no expert but, I recommend mounting the drive if you can onto another system and trying to CHROOT in so that you can copy the data to save your system, then nuke and pave. Sorry!

Thanks for the response. I was able to recover, though I could not explain why.

First, the choices in OS versions I was suddenly offered were “Solus-current-5.6.18-156.conf” and “Solus-current-5.6.19-158.conf”. Both led to the same freezing condition. I went to my UEFI, had keyboard, but no mouse. I was able to change my boot to the bootable Solus 4 USB that I installed with. While I was able to load the boot disk to desktop, my input devices failed me again.

Having no other ideas, I switch from my fancy wireless mouse and new keyboard back to my former, very basic and old keyboard and mouse. Reboot to OS on SSD. I am able to login with these older input devices. Everything operating normally. I disconnect them and switch back to my new keyboard & mouse without restarting. Both work perfectly. Reboot. Everything works as it should, no further problems. No idea what happened. The universe seemed to think that I didn’t need that half-hour or something.
