peterandrewd You'll forgive me for not wanting to go through point by point on every single one of these posts as they come through. We've had 1-2 of these posts every month between the Forums and Reddit for the almost 4 years that I've been involved with the project. There has never been and never will be a definitive collection of FAQs that will satisfy the kinds of questions that y'all come up with when it comes to the future of the project. And even when we do provide direct answers for individual questions, people still react poorly because they inevitably disagree with our opinion of where we are or how we should run things. It's exhausting. It's never rewarding. And you'll never be 100% satisfied with what I have to say.
peterandrewd What do you think, is there any future plan in place at all regarding growing the team/development of Solus?
We had a roadmap for current development projects. People assumed that this was a set of deadlines rather than estimates for how long we thought certain projects would take. Inevitably, things took longer than people were expecting and they started complaining about not getting an updated Roadmap. Taking down the roadmap was a lot easier than dealing with repeated demands to update a Roadmap that had not fundamentally changed. You can still read the original blog post here: https://getsol.us/2019/01/14/2019-to-venture-ahead/ The dates are no longer relevant, but the general projects are.
I already answered this in the FAQ. We are not accepting donations right now for the reasons explained there. No, we have not made progress in changing this. That's not an easy process and Josh and I have full-time jobs that do take priority over Solus sometimes. That's just life.
peterandrewd Gaining backers, etc and worth the worry of it becoming inactive in the near future?
Backers have never been a priority goal for Solus. Solus is a passion project of a few dedicated individuals, all working together towards the same shared vision of what a desktop Linux experience should be. When I started working on the project in October of 2016, there were 3 existing Core Team members (Ikey, Josh, and Justin) and a handful of regular community members submitting patches. Currently, there are 2 Core Team members (@JoshStrobl and myself), 4 Global Maintainers (@ermo, @Girtablulu, @kyrios, and @joebonrichie), and several Community Maintainers (listed in one of Josh's responses). In terms of general activity, the project has significantly more patches flying around than ever before. We are growing, slowly, but steadily.
peterandrewd And to be blunt, the hesitance or hesitance of not wanting to discuss it with me and directly answer my questions, makes me have 2nd thoughts about using it and is making it hard for me to recommend the switch to others.
I believe our work speaks for itself. If you don't like what we're doing or disagree with how we are doing it, you are free to your own opinions. I work on Solus because it's the Linux distribution I want to use, not because other people want to use it.
If you want me to respond to further questions, please lose the attitude. I don't owe you anything. I do this in my free time. Respect and patience are two-way streets.
