Recommended mount locations for extra drives

So I'm preparing the switch to Linux / Solus and am unsure where the usual or recommended location is to permanently mount extra drives / network shares.

Searching for this I found mostly conflicting or distro specific information.
Like use "/mnt", don't use "/mnt", use "media", don't use "/media" etc.

I assumed due to the standardized file system hierarchy there would be a single go-to location but it doesn't seem to be the case.

For now the options that make most sense to me are:

Just create subfolders directly under "/" and mount there
Just create subfolders in my user's "/home" and mount there

Are there any recommendations on where to / where not to mount in Solus or doesn't it really matter?

/mnt is usually used for temporary mounting. In other words, where user can mount things. Personally I use this to mount my NAS drives (music, backups, ...) when I am @ home
/media is mount point for removable media. In other words, where system mounts removable media (cd-rom, usb memory sticks, ...).

The mount point depends on what you have to mount. For example some companies store the user profiles on a SAN, and of course they mount it under /home when the user connects to a machine on their network.

I don't know if it's "correct" or not but I have my HDDs manually mounted under /mnt and haven't had any problems this way

I do the same, and have for years, and I've never had any kind of a conflict. When I first started using an NAS, it seemed to me that /mnt was the perfect place to mount those shares, as it appeared to be unused by anything else.

Yeah those match most of things I read.

But there were also posts mentioning possible conflicts when using "/mnt". But if it doesn't cause problems on Solus, I'll use it as well since it makes the most sense tme me anyway.
