try Budgie first, and if you have any problems, try Mate instead. I recommend Balena Etcher for writing disk images on Windows.
The live image provides a test environment, so you can try it out before installing, but the live media is not persistent - i.e. you won't be able to install programs or save files to the USB stick. If you like Solus you can install it to disk - just make sure you back up anything important first. 🙂
