I don't use the application but there was a request to update gpmdp to the latest version https://dev.getsol.us/T8584
The latest versions changelog states:

FIX: Arguably an important part of the app, you can now sign in again!

I assume it is just flat out broken in its current state. I tried to update it months ago and could not get the newer version to compile.

I looked at what Arch was doing just now and it seems they're just repackaging the .deb so I guess they can't get it to compile either.

FYI: Google Play Music is yet another service google is shutting down.

Until the fixed version is available in the repo you can use the snap: https://snapcraft.io/google-play-music-desktop-player

It works almost perfectly except for ugly cursor and back and forward navigation doesn't work.
