Install brscan from our repo--that might cover the scanner side of the machine.
for giggles type 'brother' into the software center search.
you might see you model, you might not. If so, install that too.

and read the submission instructions, and clearly request a driver package. they will accommodate you.
if solus print settings sees your brother, calls it by name, and you can't print, then you need drivers as you already know. all is my 2 cents. there are probably other ways
