I use Solus with i3 on my work computer. I find it really great for that- I have a workspace for email, slack and terminals, a workspace for firefox, one for my IDE, etc. it's very fast to switch between different workspaces and tasks without reaching for the mouse. I also like i3 for laptops, since maybe you don't have a mouse with you and using the keyboard is easier than the awful little touchpad...
I wouldn't recommend it if you want to use any fixed-size windows, for example most windowed games... they work, but just in a clunky way.
it's very easy to install i3 and try it out though, and uninstall it if you don't like it. if you do install i3 I'd recommend also installing nitrogen (wallpapers), compton (transparency), rofi (application chooser). you'll need to be comfortable with the command line and setting up config files!
