MATE Tweaks setting for panel icon size?

While I was working with the other DEs yesterday, I noticed that MATE Tweaks lists a setting that should allow changing the size of the panel icons (defaulting to 16 px). But that setting, and several others, is grayed-out and not able to be changed.

Since that might provide a better UI for my 4K UHD telly than Budgie does, I looked for another setting that might enable those panel settings, but couldn't find one. Since I'm not normally a MATE user, I'm wondering whether Solus simply doesn't support that icon size setting, or I should keep looking?

I love Budgie, but on the TV from across the living room, it's really hard to distinguish one panel icon from another. I'd change to a different DE for that one computer if the icon size could be increased.

Changing icon size in Solus Mate Tweak is disabled only in panels with Solus layout, as well as in any other Custom layout which derives from Solus. Don't know why.

Icon size may be freely changed in Fedora, GNOME2, openSUSE layouts and their derivatives.

Well, "freely" actually means "Default - 16px - 22px 24px - 32px - 48px" 🙂 .

Don't be scared to change a layout. Any of them may be transformed into anything you wish.

Thanks! I was afraid I'd need to change to Mint, or openSUSE, or some other distro for that machine. Those selections would be just what I need for the media computer.

Indeed! With the 48 px panel icon setting, I can easily see them from across the room. And with the HiDEF display setting, no other fudging is needed.

Special Bonus: There is absolutely no screen tearing, and that's without requiring any special modifications. It just works great as-is. I have a feeling that MATE will be my media computer's DE from now on.

Slightly off-topic, but on "panels" subject... Remember that we can have in Mate as many panels as we wish, more than one panel at the same screen edge, expanded or not, attached or detached from screen edges, placed horizontally or vertically, an applet may be moved from one panel to another... Panels are very flexible in Mate.
