WetGeek and I guess that if you had a mac it would talk to the NAS using AFP, so you'd have 3 services running and consuming resources on the NAS for doing the same thing. Each being a potential door for a hacker to gain access to your data, each subject to vulnerabilities, etc...
Not even mentioning that NFS & Samba manage the permissions in a totally different way so securing the personal data in such configuration becomes challenging.
Linux, macs and (recent) windows hosts can all connect to NFS or SMB... only AFP is a bit more complicated, especially on windows hosts.
Personally, I don't like NFS (v3 security is a joke, v4 is a PITA to configure and isn't suited for home networks). Samba was too slow an caused lags when streaming high definition video to my linux machine. Since I had SSH enabled to do remote administration on my NAS, I decided to go for SSHFS, which is easy to setup & secure and performances were better than samba. -> I use this from all my devices including my mobile phone when it's connected to the LAN.
And now @kenthorpe uses webDAV for filesharing... plenty of possibilities depending on what people need/want.
