The Planet will be fine without our help.
If the ecosystem goes through a reboot, there is plenty of time for that to happen. The planet is not in a hurry.
With that said, it does seem like humanity in general is being wasteful and stupid in our use of the resources on the planet - be they human, animal, vegetable or mineral.
Slavery has been a part of human activity for as long as written records exist. Often, one of the first uses of writing is record keeping to support and expand the existing institutions of slavery. I don't think it is reasonable to expect humanity to treat the rest of the planet any better than we treat each other.
Viewed through that lens, we are all part of a large and largely dysfunctional family. I think adding more respect, dignity, and compassion to overall human behavior will solve a lot of problems, environmental abuse included. That's done via education, religion, and politics. These are hard things to do right.
