Building glibc and newer Linux kernel for Solus on WSL

Hello!

I am the author of Suru++ icons theme, added by Solus developers to eopkg. I have Solus natively on my PC and it is all OK.

I built a Solus for WSL, but I received the FATAL: kernel too old error, I believed that I missed the glibc and Linux kernel libraries, but it is impossible to build from source into Solus on WSL, because clear, ls, uname, etc. emit the same error. Maybe @fishyman65712 may know, if I am not wrong.

I am aware that Solus's container/image's Docker does not have this error. Maybe @feddamisch know.

Are you just trying to build packages for Solus? If so, solbuild is a lot easier to set up and does everything in a chroot. https://github.com/getsolus/solbuild

I only skipped the step Building packages because it is not clear because it requires a package.yml. I created an empty package.yml. But the error still insists.

gusbemacbe Sorry, I was suggesting that as an option for another WSL image (i.e. Ubuntu). I'm not familiar enough with building WSL environments to help you debug them.

One of Mictosoft team developers who take care for the WSL, also can not help and suggested us to contact you. He has never used Solus.

But @yuk7 said his explanation was not clear, then it was his fault. He indicated the Linux kernel version.

WSL requires Linux 4.4.x or Linux 4.19.x.

I checked Solus' Linux kernel version, I saw it was Linux 4.9.13.

I would like to install Linux 4.4.x, set it as default and remove all other Linux kernels.

I saw you were responsible for the repo linux-current 4.19.12.

Did you compile it with solbuild? Does solbuild install this repo directly to the OS?

I tried to follow the tutorials referred in https://discuss.getsol.us/d/65-updating-kernel-to-latest-version and https://discuss.getsol.us/d/565-upgrade-kernel-5-0, but 4.9 is still default.

gusbemacbe we are on kernel 5.3, thats linux-current , you are using linux-LTS if you have such an old version

I have removed linux-lts, and installed linux-current, but I have checked uname -r, and I saw it is still 4.9.13.

kyrios WSL does not support Linux 5.3.x.

I have to compile from source Linux 4.4.x or 4.19.x.

But I will give up, as Solus does not have 4.4.x and 4.19.x

gusbemacbe Every package in Solus is built by solbuild. That's it's whole purpose for existing.

Why do you even need WSL? That isn't something we support and we're not going to be using extremely old kernels just to enable support for something we don't support in the first place. And you likely wouldn't even have the necessary kernel modules enabled for WSL (because why would we enable those for something we don't support?).

I'm confused by your intentions here.
