im not sure what this is called but its highly useful, is it for ubuntu only? im talking about those little badges that display how many unread emails youve got etc. probably the only thing i miss about ubuntu

No, you may not have it, it's Ubuntu specific. They're using a specific branch of Dash-to-Dock for Ubuntu.
