Never got a Lexmark S606 to work. Not even with supplied drivers. Haven't tried that for a while, though.

My mother-in-law had a Canon Pixma which started printing and scanning gracefully after adding it from settings. Epson SX218 works with open drivers (both scanning and printing). Now I've got a HP LaserJet M1132 which, guess what, works.

You say Solus finds and sets up the printer. Is that during Solus installation or some other mechanism?

Ah, yes good question. During the set-up process within "Settings / Devices / Printers: Add".

samsung ml-2160 does not work out of the box or via the add printers interface (this was about 18 month ago, dont know if the situation has improved)

solution: download driver http://www.samsungdrivers.net/samsung-ml-2160-driver/
-extract
-run install-printer.sh or install.sh (sudo required i guess)
-add printer thru the regular gui
