  • Diary of a happy distrohopper II: Solus praise & joy

Here's my notes of praise from a years Solus Budgie use, 10/10 on a scale from 1-6 from me for:

  • auto mute volume when removing jack cable is so so smooth
  • volume mixer in the (Raven?) panel (meta + a)
  • suspend to disk and battery notifications
  • Budgie Menu perfect as universal launcher for any app or setting
  • most settings can be quickly navigated from keyboard, mouseless
  • file manager navigation and fuzzy search sort of almost perfect (just missing a shortcut to jump to the left column menu, never found it)
  • DLNA (out of KODI) out of the box, no driver hunt needed
  • digitizer driver for MyPaint and Krita as well, that was one of the main reasons for installing it in the first place (instead of Ubudgie or Elementary)
  • rolling release is very convenient, thanks a lot to core team and all the package maintainers

korbendallaskoop Read parts 1 and 2. One will hear variations of your journey a lot around here. It is a joyous thing to discover solus, no doubt, and contemplate the route you got there.
I was WIN/MAC most of life but when I decided I needed no more MS in my life here's how it went: Mint=10 minutes. Ubu=10 minutes. Both ugly. Solus, scrappy independent, and never looked back. Not a hopper, it was love at first sight. Good read.

*** can't edit OP, sorry, forgot to mention:

    • image viewer is great and handy (crop and resize would be nice but ok, it's a viewer)
    • no fuss with firewire (it's a thing and it rocks till 2025 and beyond)
    • no fuss with eSATA out of ancient laptop dock
    • native redshift is eyeboggling (or not, you decide)
    • global fuzzy/elastic Nautilus search amazing
    • as is WebDAV mapping
