I know it won't be released with Solus 4, but are there any news about the Plasma release ? I feel like it's been a while since I heard anything.
Solus 4 ?
Now I start wondering... perhaps there were some guys keeping on asking to Microsoft devs when will Windows 4 be released... after some time they found a way to solve this problem: 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, ...
And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. And one day a Microsoft Engineer decided to put some order in the version numbers : 7, 8, 8.1 but then some evil users started harassing them again asking when version 9 will be released... As a revenge, he decided version 9 would never be released and now Windows will remain in version 10 forever !
So you all who keep on asking when version 4 will be released, do you realize all this mess was caused by you !!!??
I do not care about the numbers, whatever you name them. I only care about the impatience. That's all.
You care about it way more than Core Team does. Turn it down a notch bud.
JoshStrobl I think you are right.
Greetings, Evert.
Kvothe, it's my understanding that the team has been working toward Sol 4 and Budgie 10.5*. I believe I saw it stated that Plasma work would get more resources after that.
Ready when its Ready
I don't care if you guys put another couple of 9's behind the version number. Might as well just call it Solus and have updated images every once in a while, like summer 2019 for example. That being said i would love to see the kernel 5.0 and mesa 19.0 but that's because i ordered a Radeon VII and it's recommended to have the latest and greatest at this point

Spoiler: they jump straight to 5
Gaming4LifeDE If that's all that happens, then why do people act as if Solus 4 is going to be more than that?

As sad as it makes me, I have to agree with Kyrios , it's just gonna be a particular release that gets assigned a number. There may be some milestone component in it, or it may be 'Today, I feel like Solus should be 4.0'. Take it for what it's worth
I will still get a moment of joy when the bootloader menu shows 'Solus 4.0' or 'Solus 4'.
I thought Solus 4 would have lasers and robots?

I totally agree. Put the version numbers in the bin, and release images every quarter or something, just tag them with the date.
It's starting to get a bit tiresome with all this talk about "Solus 4".
To the devs: Just keep doing what you are doing, and I think we all will be happy. Solus is awesome!
henkesteen Yep, Arch does the same and it's still rolling release. Might take some of the pressure off of the devs.
I'd like to remind people that our release model is actually something we touched on in our In Full Sail article. While I know many of you wouldn't be opposed to an ISO snapshot release and largely doing away with release numbers, the simple reality is most people do care about them. Even when two releases aren't fundamentally different, like the change from Linux kernel 4.20 to 5.0, from a marketing perspective it is more appealing and is more impactful.
Here's the bit from the post:
Solus has long been defined as a curated rolling release operating system. This model enables us to rapidly deliver new updates to our projects or relevant software stack in a manner that does not sacrifice the overall stability of the user experience.
In the past, we have alternated between major releases and ISO snapshots. Going forward, we will have a model that enables us to release new versions of Solus every month while still providing adequate amounts of time for larger projects to mature before shipping them.
This model will have both major and minor releases. Starting with Solus 4, which is our upcoming major release, we will be implementing this new model.
We tried the whole "name it by the date we released / tagged it on" with ISO snapshots 2017.01.01.0 and 2017.04.18.0.
Does anyone remember those names? Because I sure didn't, I had to go look them up. Those releases actually had stuff in them too. 2017.01.01.0 had Budgie 10.2.9 and updates to the Software Center. It shipped Brisk Menu for the MATE Edition. For 2017.04.18.0, we shipped clr-boot-manager OOTB, updated the GNOME Stack, performed various kernel enablement, etc.
The reality is the ISO snapshot model and the naming conventions of traditional release models suit us well, both required for different purposes. Having simple MAJOR.MINOR version naming conventions is better for marketing and general appeal. The ISO snapshot model is better for us than traditional release models because we're a curated rolling release.

How about Budgie 50.1? 10.5 > 50.1.
And Solus shall be updated soon after from 3.9999 to -9.3333.
But seriously, I prefer it the way the team is doing already, it's much more legible in my opinion.
JoshStrobl Perhaps you care to much about the numbers,:
solus 4.0, 4.1, 4.2......
solus 5.0, 5.1, 5.2.....
solus 6.0, 6.1, 6.2.....
That's the way it has to be.
By the way, I also like the name of the new package manager sol ... means sun in Portuguese.

Solus could stop using numbers but instead only code names for major versions that would be disclosed only when the ISO is about the be released.
And the minor versions (snapshots), we could simply add something like "refresh" (R) or "update" (U) as suffix
This would give Solus Fortitude, Solus Fortitude R1 (or U1), Solus Fortitude R2 (or U2).
This way Solus 5 will never exist and its code name would be exposed only when the ISO is getting ready for release so people can scream/cry/beg/implore/swear to know when Solus 5 would be release and the answer would be NEVER
Release an iso once a year: solus 2019, solus 2020 etc, and roll forever, perhaps?? The iso could just be whatever the latest sync had in it so folk could install something recent. The version number thing is tiring enough to read as an observer. I can't imagine how it must be for the devs and contributors, having to deal with the apparent fixation some have with it. I applaud your patience. As an i3 user, I don't expect to notice much, regardless. Users holding out for a release version seems antithetical to the whole idea of a rolling release, imho.
kyrios
A really devious mind would name the next release Fortitude Is Very Exciting, without a release number, and call it a day....
I think from marketing perspective, 6 month ISO refreshes are necessary to keep sufficient new user interest in the project.
Also, keep female names like Shannon. People like female names and most Linux users are men, so they like it double and it's psychologically soothing for them.

Honestly, monthly iso refreshes like JoshStrobl said, are a much better idea.
They're important, as without them when a new hardware comes out (eg a GPU), the average user [who has this hardware] will have trouble installing Solus until the iso is refreshed to include newer drivers that support it.
6 months between refreshes is just too long.
People like female names and most Linux users are men, so they like it double and it's psychologically soothing for them.
There's gender inequality in the tech space and I have no interest in helping to continue that by catering towards one specific gender. It also doesn't make sense, it's the name of a release of an operating system, not your first-born.
My the directions this thread goes is amusing
I'm just saying, from a marketing perspective it makes sense. I'm not talking about political correctness or gender equality.
I know that for example Linux Mint Sarah sounds better than Fedora Beefy Miracle or Ubuntu "Insert crazy animal name here"
I for one want an OS with numbers. I could never remember what Ubuntu version name I was running on each machine.
Rolling Release is a foreign concept actually. Most software, all hardware is static = no upgrades. So people have a hard time understanding the concept in general never mind one that's timeline is not written in stone.
Possible definition for Solus Rolling Release: Weekly updates (fridays) for Security updates and Solus tested program upgrades. Os upgrades major (Solus4) and minor (Solus 4.1) are released when fully developed and tested to insure smooth reliable performance to all.

I hope this will answer your question.
Sorry a noob question does sudo eopkg upgrade will upgrade my version to 4.0. ?
It's officially here! https://discuss.getsol.us/d/248-solus-4-fortitude-released
evert I've said it so many times before : be patient. Solus 4 will come, Budgie 5 will come, Gnome 5 will come. It won't change the world. You will keep the same fantastic system as all the years before assurances obsรจques. And I know what I am talking about, I use Solus allready from day 1. It will all become in time.
But I'm sure that with some updates, it will be more fantastic than before.
