at 1:31 he says this law has the potential to turn "the device you own into a massive data collection dragnet."

WIN 10/11 EULA says every file you have in every folder is sent back to HQ, every keystroke, every voice intonation and 25 more layers of telemetry…that he didn't know that WIN is already a "massive data collection" for the last decade so I am perplexed that he didn't know.

But the rest of this was on the money: Linux is not one person. "In the Linux world you can't regulate a damn thing" he says later on. He makes sense of both CA and CO laws and even cites CO law that says software distributors/creator can't be on the hook for anything.

He stumbled at 1:31 but concluded at the end that proprietary software it easy to corral in and control for the 18 thing than anything FOSS. Pretty good overall.

brent My takeaway.. other than these laws are 100% crap and a total 4th amendment violation and will definitely be tied up in litigation at some point, is that lawmakers have come to the sobering realization that they are impotent against the decentralized nature of FOSS - another huge win for Linux in general.

I agree with this. But now that we are on the radar of those with sharp teeth…but this will take a generation of lawyers and litigating methinks to get a handle of the decentralized nature of FOSS.

zmaint You know, I had the same sense about the early days of the web.

Look at where we are now.

Worse, I do not trust the judiciary to make sane or feasible judgements concerning.

I'd rather not be a gangster just for choosing a non-corporate OS to run (or heaven forbid an old machine from before the bad times), but the ugly truth is either you will figure out a means to comply with at least the stated goals of the legislation or someone will do it for you.

A couple of generations was all it took to lose the web.

brent MS is one of many and not even the largest or arguably worst on the list. That said there is always one strength in FOSS that it or others cannot overcome. There is also a vested interest in keeping the developers who build the Linux ecosystem happy.

The lawmakers should define clearly how this could be done

in order not violate other laws about personal data that

are already active. Age verification is one thing , data

collection is another.

qsl I agree, these people are left unchecked to run rampant by a generally low IQ populace… given enough time, they can and do ruin everything they touch.
