So I am looking around and see Hard Disk Sentinel offers a free linux version (with add on GUI! Woo-hoo!), but Solus isn't mention specifically for compatibility, nor would I even know how to approach installing this.

Is it workable? Is there some equivalent either as a flatpak or in the repository I am overlooking? Other approaches?

qsl You can download the GUI version but do not use the install.sh script as it causes problems.
Copy the extracted files into a folder and name it something that allows you to find it again.
Run HDSentinel_GUI directly from your file manager.
In Dolphin you will be prompted for user password, I think in nautilus you need to choose 'run as administrator'.
I'm sure there is an easy way to make a desktop shortcut but never had any success in doing this.
I just use it as a portable application.
Edit: Alternatively write a small script to run HDSentinel from the terminal.
#!/bin/bash sudo ./HDSentinel
Save the above into an empty file and name it something like Run in Terminal which makes a good prompt.
Select properties>permissions of your new file and Allow executing file as a program.
Make sure your new file is in the same directory as HDSentinel.

Nevermind. Did as you said (extract to named folder, extract the GUI to the same folder, and poke around the entries GUI folder, entered password and viola it worked [and apparent my cables are going bad]).

Such a strange install procedure coming from the windows world.

I run it using Auto start on Plasma although I have found recently with Mesa updates when minimising to system tray you cant restore the window so I just minimize it and that works for me.

qsl I spent a lot of my time in Windows using small portable maintenance apps that could be carried on a usb stick or downloaded quickly. Sordum and Nirsoft were two good examples. In Linux I think I achieve better functionality with bash scripts. They are smaller and often work much smoother than Windows equivalents. I only have about 20 bash scripts as I only write one to fulfil a specific task that I will need to use often.
Although often disregarded, SMART diagnostics and Check Disk functions are two of the first checks that I would carry out on a faulty computer. I mostly prefer to boot from a Solus Plasma iso because I find it easier to get disk information from that point.

For basic hardware testing and fixing.

Just easier for me as I still have win7 machines.
