help me interpret solus matrix packaging announcements

I'm new to this so just learning my way. I'm on Budgie Experimental repo and unstable repo.

a typical in-between Friday sync looks like:

see the Linux kernel in there? I'm wary of that. I've been told to be wary of that.

So I hit N.

I've been told to keep track of Solus Matrix Packaging channel to see if pre-sync packages, especially Kernel, were ready to rock….or ready to wreck system..

here's the last announcement:

what is this saying exactly ^^ ? Unsafe to update, or safe?

brent Unstable: Unblocked means that it is 'safe' to update (i.e. there are no package builds ongoing). However, the purpose of unstable as I'm sure you know is for those intrepid explorers to test these updated packages before releasing them to the hordes, and to be prepared for breakages.
You are a bit stuck at the moment as you're testing the new Budgie version which requires you to also be on unstable. Ideally, I'd think you’d be better off on stable. What I'd suggest you do while in this position is to only update at weekly sync; at this point unstable and Polaris will be pretty much the same.

I've been doing it this way ^^ to play it safe. Thank you.

But as far as Solus, I like to live on the edge 🙂

I would have given it to both of them but that choice does not exist yet 🙂

PS--I did a full unstable update, with new kernel, and everything works flawless

brent Yeah had to just give it to the first. Both were excellent answers.

For what its worth, many of us primarily use Unstable, as we obviously have to test. And even some of us have accidentally done an update when it was blocked for something important like a new kernel or DE update was going in. Trust me, don't! That is not a fun experience. Sometimes a simple fix, sometimes not.

We typical use these:

Unblocked

The default status of unstable. You can update. Staff can push packages to the unstable repo.

Frozen / semi-frozen / slushed

You can update. This is more a message for staff saying not to land new packages in unstable with some exceptions. Not something average users have to worry about.

Blocked for sync

You can update. Staff should not push any package to unstable because we are syncing unstable to polaris (stable).

DO NOT UPDATE or DO NOT UPDATE, x builds/rebuilds in progress.

Surprise surprise means do not update. Some staff may omit the "DO NOT UPDATE" part an just say x builds/rebuild in progress.

Yeah, likely coming post-sync this week there will be a Qt, KDE Frameworks / Gear / Plasma update + required rebuilds which I am expecting to block people on unstable updating for over 12 hours.

In case you were unaware, if you are using the Element client instead of scrolling through topic change announcements in the room itself you can just click on the room header where it says "Solus Packaging" and a sidebar will pop up and show you the current room topic. Makes it easier to see the current status.

everything I read when I scroll is all the time-consuming things/apps you rebuild and patch up. Cast of thousands of things daily.It's incredible; an eye-opener.

I am using the browser and it's clunky. It took two days for it not to default at the beginning of the day (the very top) all the time (takes forever to get to the bottom) and now it stays on last post for now. Element client I will try to make time for. Thanks for the advice
