What is your average laptop temperature?

Greetings fellow Solus user!

I'm currently running the latest Solus 4 GNOME edition, and while I do enjoy using it very much (I say this while not under duress!), I do notice quiet randomly and not often enough to pinpoint the problem, that my laptop will run rather hot. Right now it's about ₆₅ degrees celsius, which is very warm to the touch! Not running any editing software or games mind you, this is just from a fresh boot, rather odd I find as GNOME doesn't always do this (and yes this can happen even when all extensions are disabled). At times though GNOME can run rather cool to the touch, but lately (last week or two) it's run a bit hotter than I prefer (looks towards Budgie).

Anyways! Get on with your question you may ask? Well for those curious I'm not so much looking for fixes and the like at the moment (i believe the culprit itself could be gnome-shell quite frankly 😛), but more I'm very curious what all the other laptop users out there are running and how cool or hot their systems typical are on average, so feel free to share! To get my CPU/GPU temp I use the GNOME extension Freon which works with the latest GNOME, or you can use a terminal of your choice and use the command sensors to see your temperatures.

I believe for my average temperatures right now, on the cool end it runs at about 49 degrees celsius and on the hot tamale end it runs up to 65 degrees. Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Mine passive netbook usually runs at 55C, and never exceeds 62C. But is is an Intel Atom x5-8300, so not a good reference point for you.
Honestly I don't think your temperatures are bad. Obviously Gnome Shell making your components work harder than they need to is not a good thing, but 65 is great for a laptop. Macbooks can reach 80 at idle because they keep the fan turned off for as long as possible.
So I don't think your question will give you a lot of meaningful data as it is all i the fan curve.

Back in the days when using Windows 10, and still unaware of the Linux wonderland, I used to put my coffee just by the laptop air exit to keep it hot while working. Now with Solus I cannot do that anymore. My coffee always gets cool after 5 minutes unless I close the windows, in which case it will last for 5 more minutes at an acceptable temperature for a coffee. #sadNotsad

My laptop runs at 30-40 C in idle or while running lightweight tasks, but can quickly go up to 80-85 C if I run a 3D game or playback a high-bitrate 1080p HEVC in mpv with a few heavy settings.
Keep in mind that my laptop is nearly 10 years old. It has a Corei7-950M and Radeon HD 5850.

I have a thinkpad x230. According to pSensor, the fan spins up to 6k rpm. The internals are cool but the external is toasty. Under normal day to day use, the cpu is around 50 degrees celcius, but if you put it on your lap, it's not a comfortable experience. But then again, it's an i5 3320M with a tdp of 35 Watt. Most modern laptops nowadays use a U processors that consumes less powers and newer processors are more efficient. Thinkpad x230 only has 1 fan too. So 🤷

Tried installing Freon but received an error. How did you manage to make it work?

Fatih19 I also received an error when I installed it last week under version 36 of the extension, but the developer was quick to respond and version 38 just released for Gnome shell 3.32 which works fine for me. Don't know what version you have currently installed, but the latest one works fine for me now.
