brent I've been doing this for many years. Holidays always used to involve 6+ hours of driving and like you, we did not want the distraction of minor irritations.
Relying on computers to provide a random choice kind of breaks what computers are about. Putting in the effort to create a random-ish play order can certainly provide you with a kind of random mix although the same song order will play each time. Favourite playlists left me expecting the next song before it played. Play order can be mixed up in other ways, like by sorting by title and then applying track numbers.
It doesn't always work, the car stereo refuses to acknowledge track numbers or folder choices mostly and just does it's own thing. It is the first time I have had that problem. The random selection on the car stereo is dire.
I am pretty sure that Mp3tag has been recommended to you before (and also Mp3Gain) if you have found a Linux equivalent to either of these please let me know as they are pretty much the sum of my Wine requirements on this laptop.
Edit: I have noticed that Puddletag is in the Solus repo, I will give that a try and let you know how it behaves.
Edit 2: For any fans of Mp3tag (Windows) Puddletag (Linux) comes as a pleasant surprise, the layout is very similar and just as intuitive. Some features like changing Album Art embedded in the mp3 can be accessed with a right-click and selecting Extended Tags. It features various sort options by clicking on the column headers and an Auto-numbering wizard so your desired 'random' selection can be set. Very good find, very pleased with it.

I think you are right. I was not looking at it that way, but I think I should have been.

I listen exclusively to hard rock and heavy metal, and there are (at least) three very good DAB+ radio stations for that in Germany. They play around the clock—at home, at work, and in the car. And my wife, kids, and pets have been used to it for years.

So I don't need any streaming, ripping, music players or anything like that... 😉

all good FM stations (airwaves) in the USA, like these you are mentioning, cease and desisted in the 2000's and disappeared. They were replaced by sterile, corporate radio that is indistinguishable between 'stations.'

In other words, my hand has been forced to digitize the music I love...

brent A small addition because I mentioned it. Mp3gain backend can be installed from the repo by using sudo eopkg it mp3gain. There is a nice frontend for this called Qmp3gain which is very similar to the Windows Mp3gain layout and runs much faster too.
This and a decent mp3 tag editor are essential add-ons for anyone wishing to play any number of tracks from various sources.
My dependency on Wine is now ended 😄 a very profitable thread for me anyway 😆

Tauon was recently added to Arch repo btw, no need for flatpak or AUR 😉

I mostly listen by albums in order that the artist envisioned. I also like to mark the best songs in the playlist with 💓 So later I could add to the queue only favorite songs I can listen first, some of them several times.

I actually have an Arch distrobox on my system, so I just installed it that way to test it out. Working perfectly! This is why I love distrobox.

I would like to have a native eopkg package. I think it has many (python) dependencies so it would be not easy to maintain.

"MusicMatch Jukebox" asfaik is only WIN/Wine as you alluded.

Had a 2.5-hour block where I was able to concentrate on (digital)l work with no distraction today. With Tauon.

RESULT: in 'shuffle mode' I had NO duplicates. First time in a couple or more years.

I could count half a dozen players I've used recently that couldn't make the 1 hour hurdle without a repeat.

Now if it starts the duplicate BS in the 3rd hour my heart will be broke. But Tauon solid overall.
