How do i install cosmic on Solus?

would love to stick with Solus but im a big fan of the Cosmic desktop, love linux but never learned how to install a desktop environment without the being babied by the package manager or without alot of help from github, not asking for the staff to make a special iso for me or a special eopkg listing, just some guidance on how to do it myself. cheers.

Installing cosmic on Solus would be quite involving. Since it is not packaged for Solus, you will need to compile it yourself. If you go on the github of the cosmic desktop, there are instructions on what you need in order to compile cosmic yourself.

The instructions seems to be for Debian or Ubuntu based distros since it is pointing to the APT command. But it will give you a good idea of what searching for in solus packages

wazjf Hey thanks! I found that github page and was kinda confused, how does one compile packages which are not available in Solus repos? bc i assume alot of this would be substituting APT with eopkg and not all of these files would be available i assume.

mkl Honestly thats my dream but its probably out of my reach unless I can get some help or guidance on that route. Solus COSMIC just sounds cool, and id want it to suit the vibe of Solus as the devs have made budgie look amazing on Solus but, looks ass everywhere else like wouldnt use Ubuntu budgie if you held me at gunpoint.

I see some packages through Solseek, but I strongly doubt that the DE is complete and their versions seem very old anyways.

AerynOS will be available with Cosmic, hopefully we'll at least have it as an option to install on Solus.

reon Last I heard they did some early testing, which is why those packages are there. I do not believe they have it planned at this time, with it still being so early.

I have been playing around with it on AerynOS as I work on moss support for Solseek. It is a great foundation, but still needs some time, in my opinion.

Clintre true, thanks for clearing it up for me im probably just gonna have Solus on one pc and Fedora COSMIC on the other, love the concept of Manjaro but its never worked for me, constant system breaking updates made me rip my hair out.

I love solus because the package manager never gave me trouble and the updates are usually good, at least post '25.

If I wanted Cosmic as a second DE I would go with the Aeryn simply because it's somewhat intertwined with Solus, as you noted.
You can probably easily make Cosmic not "looks like ass everywhere else" thru customization. I would grow with the Aeryn version for no other reason than the adventure. Fedora and adventure have never been used in the same sentence🙂

I would go with Arch Cosmic or Aeryn Cosmic. I currently run Arch Cosmic on testing SSD, it's usable.

I don't know how intertwined the teams are between the two Distros 🤷

Technically though for most packages/themes you can do a package addition request: https://github.com/getsolus/packages/issues by creating an issue here and using the appropriate tags.

and with a bit of time you'll get a response or see if someone is interested in doing it who is capable/has the time/overlays with what solus team is comfertable with.

I imagine a new DE into the Repo's is a very big change, since its not just having it there and it as a try at your own risk, but it would need to be tested thoroughly to ensure it worked on solus/crafted in such a way.

As I recall the tale of Solus/Cinnamon. this is what I remember from the teams' mouths (again, as I remember it): 1) maintainer or not, it has a lot of moving parts and still invites too much work to an already-stretched crew
and
2) Team wishes Wayland and Cinnamon had more of a commitment to each other as all Solus offerings will be Wayland soon

**I run Cinnamon on Endeavor and I can attest the Wayland (login option) Experience is a nightmare--so much breakage. I only run it X11. It would be a nice addition and I think we will see 5 Solus DE's someday. Not soon.

Yeah maintaining a lone package is a goood bit of work, add tens or nearly a hundred to make up a desktop environment. would be nuts

Since Solus does not provide a COSMIC desktop at this time, it would be necessary for you to build it from their repos yourself. There is no guarantee this would work well, and keep in mind COSMIC is still in beta (as in - expect bugs, it's not polished yet.

If you really want to run COSMIC now, your best option is to check their website for the distributions that provide a spin with it.
