Taskbar icons for multiple windows

The taskbar combines all windows associated with one application in a single icon. This is sub optimal as clicking on the icon does not open the proper window. Certainly when for instance multiple Vivaldi browsers have distinct profiles setup.

How can one configure the taskbar behaviour that for each window an icon appears and not one icon for all?

Use "Dash to Panel" gnome extension, then in settings - Behavior - Ungroup applications. That is known to me.

From previous posts I believe theking2 is using Budgie.
@theking2 : You should really mention what DE you are using if you are asking a DE specific question. Otherwise people can't help you.

So, in Budgie options are limited. But you can replace the default shipped icon task list applet with the older task list applet. To do so, right click on your desktop and open Budgie Desktop settings.
Then select your panel, click on the plus to add an applet and chose task list applet. This might crash your panel.
Then you can remove the icon task list from your panel.
The task list applet looks ugly though:

On Budgie you can just add Task List applet.
In upcoming Budgie 10.10 Wayland there is a new Tasklist applet:

Tasklist: Our more "legacy" style Tasklist saw a complete rewrite, moving away from merely being a Wnck Tasklist to a more modern implementation that is built on top of libxfce4windowing. The new Tasklist scales better with many applications, including dynamic button sizing and dynamic scrolling (left and right navigation buttons also appear for more ease-of-use).

Pro-tip: you can keep using Icons Task list applet as a launcher. Check Icons Task list applet options and enable Only Show Favorited

This is a old bug iirc. Happens when panel size is too big. For me it's fine at 32 pixels.
