external Drive doesnt show up in Plasma

On my plasma when I plug external drive into usb Plasma popups says it has seen it
But in dolphine it doesnt show up.
All my thumb drives work fine.
Ok just plugged in thumbdrive and the notification popped up in top right
now everything shows in Dolphine even my external.

But if I just plug the external hd in it doesnt show up in dolphin?
Any Ideas.

Plasma checks the drive before trying to mount it. It could be that there are errors on it. See if you can see it on KDE Partition Manager. You should be able to see if it is mounted or not from there and also run a partition check and review hard drive SMART data (this depending on how clever your USB drive adaptor is, I have only one adaptor that supports SMART).
Previously I have had trouble accessing hard drives that were just re-formatted. To get consistent performance I prefer to wipe the partition table and start from scratch.

the usb stick triggered dolphin into seeing the external drive. interesting.

external all by itself--did you try every port? then you could rule hardware out if it's a total blackout. external needs drivers? is about my only other thought

I don't know why dolphin is being selective in observing mounted drives though

brent Yup tried both usb 3 and 2 but soon as I stuck the stick in everything showed up
Only have one external hd so cant say if it happens with others.
Works fine on my budgie laptop.

I have two external docks connected to two USB3 hubs with 4 hard drives. I have never had any problems in Plasma with them showing up in Dolphin or notification when plugged in. Windows 11 is a different matter.

does not pop up asking if I want mount it but if I use a usb stick with it popups up and show the external hd
everything works then no issues copy or doing stuff.

BuzzPCSOS That drive now lives inside the same computer and already filling up.

I got two more to prepare (Exact same drives not ssd) you got me thinking I will try ext4 next time and see if things act different this was ntfs format (shouldnt make a difference tho)
I even tried mbr and gpt.
Na mine is dumb i guess it cant do smart.
Am picky with my data had to reformat anyways and setup then I run spinrite if the drive survives that
and a health check is ok its good to go.

I always have these little weird hiccups...lol

Axios I think there was a user a while back who was having problems with ntfs depending on what version of Windows he had formatted the drive in.
This recipe seems to work best for me
Linux, Mac, Linux = vfat
Windows only = ntfs
Linux only = ext4
vfat seems to have some limitations compared with ntfs but is ok for general storage.

These disks now reside on a dell r630 running truenas and seem ok
