Pots Hi, Just a quick question: I have an NVIDIA GeForce 1650 Ti max graphics card and wanted to know if I need to install the open source kernel driver? Thanks in advance for your answers. Well done to the team!
Harvey nvidia-open? You don't have to. Although it looks like your card is supported by the nvidia-open-current package (Assuming you are on the default kernel) and nvidia officially "recommend the use of open kernel modules on all GPUs that support it.". If you are using other proprietary nvidia drivers currently you need to remove them and then install the open driver if you wish to switch.
Harvey If you or anyone else tries and it does not work leading to a blank screen. You are likely able to drop to a TTY and undo the switch. ctrl+alt+F3 and login. You now have a terminal and can rollback or manually switch drivers back to what worked.
Harvey I do not know, I do not have an nvidia card that supports that driver. Try without it, steam usually won't launch without it if needed. If it does not work I assume you would need nvidia-glx-driver-32bit
Tranquility @Pots Out of curiosity: Do you specifically WANT to run the open source drivers out of principle?
Pots Tranquility I want to use the best driver. If NVIDIA recommanded the open source driver I will install it.
Tranquility Pots But isn't the Nvidia proprietary/closed-source driver the best driver? ("best" as in "best performance") Maybe someone else can chime in as well, but I always thought the open-source-nvidia-drivers lag behind the proprietary driver in terms of performance and features.
zmaint Tranquility Yeah I'd like to know as well which one is best. I've got a 4070s, and I spend most of my time gaming. I don't want to go through the hassle of removing and installing a new driver only to find out it's no where near as good as what I'm already using.
Pots I don't have the answer, but if NVIDIA recommends open kernel drivers, it must be because they are better.
