I've installed my Solus (Plasma with Wayland) for more than 2 years now. For a very long time, everything went VERY smoothly.
But 6 months ago, or even more, I noticed something not working. Minecraft refused suddenly to launch at all. It wasn't an issue for me, since I don't play a lot. But when it happened, I searched for an explanation, and I got it: it was the nvidia proprietary driver. If I switch to the version 580, it "MAY" fix the problem. But I didn't care, and the driver was a Beta one, so I wouldn't risk it. I was thinking "Solus being a rolling-release, even if not completly, the driver will soon be updated to that version.
However, some months later, I got new issues. First with Blender which started to use Vulkan instead of OpenGL and crashed each time my computer goes to sleep or to screen saver, then, after an update, with my multi-screen which also tended to become unstable when I get out of screen saver. The solution I found on Internet? Switching to the Nvidia driver 580... which was still in Beta.
Bothered by that, I then decided to follow an advice I thought I would never have followed as a non-advanced Linux user: install the Nvidia BETA driver (so, the 580). And it fixes... EVERYTHING! My Solus has never been this smooth.
Months has passed since, I heard that a lot of rolling-release Linux OS have the Nvidia driver 580 as the current "stable" version since months already, but with Solus, it's still stuck as a "Beta" version. And it's been so long since that's the case, so long since I installed the 580 Beta which seems very stable, that I can't help but wonder why is Solus still with the version 470? Maybe there are good reasons, maybe I'm just lucky the 580 is stable with my graphic card (Ge-Force 3080), but I wanted to highlight those issues I got with 470 and my experience with 580 in case the update for the Nvidia proprietary driver has just been forgotten and is ready to be done.
