Solus 4.8 Opportunity Released

arcanemuse If you do the weekly updates regularly and your system is in good shape, Solus automatically upgrades to the new 4.8 edition. You do not have to reinstall.
You can test it by using fastfetch command in your terminal.

arcanemuse 'm really liking the new version. I had thought this was a rolling release but eopkg up or eopkg upgrade produced no results. It said no updates were available. So I had to back up my files, format the drive and install it from scratch. I still haven't gotten everything set back up the way it was but I'm lazy. Shouldn't take much more than an hour to fix everything. There should be a way to upgrade to the latest version without having to go through all of this every year, though. I tried numerous things I found on the internet. The last thing was to delete the eopkg database and rebuild it. It didn't rebuild. It was unfixable by any means I could find and so at that point I pretty much had to back up and format. LOL ooops. Well, I tried for over two hours to update my 4.7 and finally ended up breaking it so badly it just had to go. I should be good to go on that laptop for a while yet. I'm installing it on another laptop soon. I just need to pull some files off of it first. Poor little thing is struggling with Win 11. Time to set it free.

there seems to be software, hardware, human error and other factors combined in this. perfect storm. sounds like you hadn't updated for a while. @elfprince is right about all this. fixing something borked, in panic, then breaking is my stock in trade so I understand. Set 11 free or give it a different ssd/hdd and start fresh. Glad you kept your sense of humor 🙂

I installed neofetch. Same basic difference I guess as fastfetch. I checked that first to be sure where I was. Nothing like ramming your head into a tree over and over again needlessly. I think we have all done that at some point in our lives, though. If you haven't yet, then you haven't lived long enough. LOL I'll be more aware of doing updates regularly on that laptop. It's not my main machine so it sits a bit. I've got way too many laptops laying around here. They are all older and I just can't help myself. I see an old laptop and I just have to take it home and install linux on it. Somebody will just end up throwing it away. Don't want to see that happen. I take in all the strays. LOL

In another thread someday you have to give me tips. on a crappy old T-Satellite I installed Fedora Budgie Wayland Immutable so I could get a taste of Future Solus. Met all the specs.Tried both uefi and csm. Would not install. Tried a lot of distros this week...not even Alpine would boot...no luck. I wound up installing Budgie 4.8 Solus on it because that's the only distro the laptop likes. I already have 4.8 Budgie elsewhere...
...oh the problems of people with an old laptop and a couple hours to spare...

I realise that I haven't had any updates for a long time. Before seeing Solus 4.8, how do I update? Are there instructions somewhere? I've looked everywhere without finding anything, and I'm stuck on 4.7 without any updates. Is this normal? (I'm new to Solus, and relatively new to using Linux on a desktop)

Sorry, I didn't think it was sudo eopkg up but something else, because eopkg tells me that I don't have any packages to update, regardless of the connection I'm using.
I'll open an issue when I have time. I must have broken something. Where can I open it?

I migrated to Solus from OpenSuse when Leap 15 reached end of life in 2026 but it seems that the proprietary 470.xx Nvidia drivers I depended on have been removed from Solus just this month in January. Why can't I use my GPU with this new edition of Solus? I can't move back to Leap because Nvidia stopped providing the older 470.xx drivers to OpenSUSE and they aren't present in the new nonfree repos for 16. Is there any way I can still use my GPU at its original level of performance with Solus? I need the older 470.xx Nvidia driver for my GTX 660.

If I'm not mistaken, the 470.xx Nvidia drivers are in the repository:

joluveba Those are the GLX drivers and when installed they make it impossible for my system to boot. I think this may be because of unsupported features. The 470 xx drivers I installed did work.

1cupoverflow Sorry for the bad advice. I stopped using a Nvidia card a few years ago, and clearly I'm not familiar with Nvidia drivers.

Could try the Nouveau drivers by removing all nvidia drivers and rebooting. Or check Discover for the 470 drivers in the hardware section, they are still there.

Solus OS is awesome !
I like the Budgie Desktop and also now there are a lot of packages available on eopkg , when on other distros like ubuntu,debian,fedora,opensuse you have to add a repo Solus OS has them available already .
I have experienced a bug trying to make a new installation i pressed cancel to stop discover updating and then i lost xorg , can't start it , could not do anything with eopkg even if i recreated the db cause it had a message about a package ... anyway i made a new installation , removed plasma-discover and replaced it with Gnome Software , also updated using eopkg and never had a problem.

congrats on settling for a new install instead of troublshooting it to death--a good decisions for new installs that don't catch the first time.

I don't know how into housekeeping you are but when I removed Discover from my new Budgie install, there was still about 25 KDE packages thatsudo eopkg rmo did not remove. I took me a while but I viewed them as un-necessary, right or wrong.

brent Yes i don't know what went wrong with this release and how i could solve that problem if it happens again but i guess i'm not gonna face it again .
Solus is perfect now and comes with many packages on repos plus flatpaks , very good and convenient linux distro
with good software selection .
For development i found out i also need the linux-headers and binutils
