Solseek Now Available

when you asked axios a few posts ago about what he liked about SC, or indirectly, what features Solseek should have it occurred to me yesterday what a SC loss I felt.

To wit: Audacious music player (repo) was giving me a hard time, dropping the connection to my external HD all day. I said "screw audacious I'll just go look for another modest music player in the repo"....

until I remembered I could not. eopkg sr music turned up about 4 things...so did solseek...and I know Solus had about a dozen players...

...as far as software category grouping I don't think that's realistically something Solseek could/would do.

Discover because of K-packages is not a good fit for me (all my problem) and gnome-software is just a clown car with honking horns and glowing nose (totally my problem) but it's Linux and the Linux World does not need to be catering to me like I was a petulant child. I think I have to bend a little to get what I want.

Hope you feel better. When that cold/flu hits me I double down on: 1) Vitamin C 2) homemade broth and 3) garlic. I like to burn the colds/flus out my system fast,

brent Good stuff. Yeah it is something I could look into with an advanced search area or something versus being in the main list. I will certainly see what can be done and if it is feasible.

You also helped me find a small bug with search as well. I was going to come back and say you can just search for "Audacious" by name, which you can still do, but only by lower case. FZF has a weird setting by default that the search is only case incensitive IF you use all lower case. If you search by the software name with a capital letter, it then goes case-sensitive. So you have to search for "audacious" since all Solus packages are lower case. Needless to say, I have changed that for the next release.

Original-Syn well I wanted to get rid of audacious (for reasons mentioned) and find another music player and there is no way to do this without knowing all the music players solus has in its repo. So the case-sensitive was not the issue--it was not being able to see all the music players Solus offers in its repos in order for me to evaluate a replacement music player-- that was my lament. Sorry I was not clearer but that happens with me.

brent No worries. It is interesting because even on my website https://soluspkg.osyn.us/ where I do have the categories as filterable, it is difficult to find.

Discover makes it a bit easier because of the appstream information, which there is potential that I could tap into for more detail.

@brent Ooh I got an idea and I think I can make it work without a terrible amount of effort. It won't be the next release, but maybe the next one after. But got to get my head clear for this one as it is a bit more indepth, but should work well within the system as an advanced type search with categories for doing what you want.

thank you for all you do, no need to expend so much effort. I really should install software as insurance...but if you do it I will be an exciting step. I don't even think pacseek groups things,

Secondly: I added SS_EOPKG_LCACHE=1 and I'm getting the following message:

Is that OK? Do I need to generate the xxx manually?

It's faster for me now. Instead of 35 seconds to start, it now takes "only" 20 seconds.

Yeah that is the fallback if it is not found.
Try going into to Tools and Update Repo, then relaunch Solseek.

It persists after the repo is updated, there might be an error to the the path of the index file in your code?

Unfortunately, no change. It still takes about 20 seconds for the GUI to appear.

brent I had discover on Budgie it was a disaster went back to using Gnome Software
no issues (I liked Discover mostly).
I think you are totally right about mixing and matching on DE (Dont cross the streams..lol) and things
usually work out for the better.
So I think Solseek will Fill the void just fine as it matures.
And I am so Thankful for the group of people we have on the forum everybody helping all around.

covered it
I used search alot in SC just the way it handled stuff you could always find what you wanted
because alot times using search you are not 100% sure what you are looking for.
everything just clicked.
ver 6 is working alot alot smoother

Could be something when I detect the repository a user is using. It works for me on Unstable. I will do some more testing on it. It is why it was experimental but had hoped it would work for everyone.

I think you've on the right track! When I listed the repos there were two; a local repo (long unused) as well as the Solus repo. Once the local repo was deleted all went as expected, the error disappeared and solseek now loads faster.

Your second and third command both returned: Solus

johano Intersting thanks for the info. Looking deeper into things, it seems local repo can cause slowdowns with pkcon as well, which is what checks for updates. Will have to see what options there are when local repos exist.

thoughts only from a layman:

*pacseek is a case here of 'be careful what you wish for.'

*"music" typed into solseek or eopkg might net four results, maybe one player.

*but pacseek scrapes everything (metadata too if you look at deadbeef entry) and not that many musics players....lots of ancillary stuff

*but the arch yay -Ss music player beats them all:

if eopkgcould do this, than the solseek/eopkg combo would be unstoppable to me. like @axios said, you fill a necessary void and many thank you for it. It's all getting dialed in. Solus is an exhilarating living, breathing adventure and beautiful OS to boot. But ya all know this 🙂
