Display goes off kilter when unplugging from HDMI cable

Not every time, but too frequently, my laptop's display goes wonky when unplugging from the HDMI cable. The background goes black (instead of my selected image) and everything is about 3/4 size, with the right quarter just black. While I still have use of the cursor, clicks don't align with the icons. The only fix I've found -- other than rebooting -- is to plug the cable back in and let the monitor sync. I sometimes have to re-plug and unplug multiple times before everything is back to normal on the laptop's screen. I have an LG Gram, model 17Z990-R.AAS7U1 with Intel UHD Graphics 620 (WHL GT2), running Budgie.

I am not 100% sure if your plugging in and unplugging monitors while powered up
not sure how good idea that is.
Maybe if you shut monitor off before unplugging.
That is if I understand you right.
Other than Usb stuff I am a stickler for powering down.

I'll try powering down the monitor first, although the laptop's screen doesn't come on until I unplug the cable. Also, I only remember this happening over the last year or two while I've been on Solus for about 8 years. But it's worth trying -- thanks for the suggestion.
