Which DE are you talking about?
There is Hanabi extension for GNOME for live wallpaper.
I also had some success with xwrinwrap on Budgie / X11 DE's.

kappa Hanabi doesn't work if you use Budgie. You could try with Hidamari. But frankly I havn't any success running live wallpaper on Budgie.
