I've decided to finally cash-in on my unique appearance (not really) and am in need of a web cam that plays well with Xfce.

Cheap is the operative word here as well as detailed instructions of how it is installed and if it requires any other software.

Did not see any other discussions concerning this.

Is your PC HDMI capture possible? And do you have digital camera with HDMI output?
Such camera can work as web cam through HDMI as this way.

I believe these things are DE-agnostic unless you know something I don't know which is 99% possible but I never heard of DE-specific cameras but I don't read everything.

Logitech would have you covered if you are into the whole clip-the-gadget-to-your-screen type dealio.
I have a Logi C270 which is good quality I think I paid $40 on Ebay for it.
Researched the crap out the Logis since they seem to be the majority of the market. If I eyeball myself on a Zoom whatever it's crisp...
...of course Zoom has a 'take-years-off-my-appearance' feature in their video settings.
There's much crappier ones below this that I'd tried (for nothing more than biz or fam) that are sketchy for effects/distortions/foggy appearance etc.

TLDR: if $40USD is what you want to spend I think you will do alright. everything under the C270 I tried was mediocre. 270 as the baseline is like my opinion. man. lot of blah blah I hope theres a little value in there

Any software required for operation? Is it just recognized under linux?

I forgot on the driver stuff.
No.
All was plug and play for me (low to mid range Logis) no need for drivers or proprietary downloads. Solus has it covered for these models.

I’m not sure if we’re not straying from the topic. However, if the suggestion is to use a camera, I would recommend a phone.
For example, we can install DroidCam on both the phone and the computer.
We need sudo eopkg it v4l2loopback-current.
Then run: sudo modprobe v4l2loopback devices=1 video_nr=10 card_label="Virtual Camera"
Finally, launch DroidCam on both devices. Tested on Teams.

The picture isn’t very good. This one happens to be IriunWebcam, but DroidCam works the same way. The basic version of DroidCam for Android is limited. The Pro version offers more features, but it’s paid.
