Been formatting and doing computers most my life but this has me confused for some reason.

Have Solus on 1 drive with a Ntfs Partiton If I format the ntfs with Linux and use linux no issues.
Have a 2nd drive formatted to Ntfs to and in linux no issues.

But windows refuses to see them
If I partion either In windows with Ntfs then linux complains about file system but sees them fine.

Chased my tail all afternoon I need windows to see them Win10
I feel like a dummy..lol

Should note that if I format with win10 can not get win7 to see the drives which is strange as hell.
The drive is WD with perfect health and all.

I remember a thing very like this a few years ago. The issue then was that Solus would not see a hard drive that had previously had Windows on it despite deleting all the partitions. Only way to fix it was to wipe the partition table.
Very likely that there is more information stored on a hard drive than we can see even with a partition manager. Or maybe just Windows throwing a hissy fit.

Why not format from Windows then? Assume you dual boot or something. If the Ntfs is only for access then why not try Exfat which should be compatible in Win or Linux.
I wonder if a future Windows feature might be getting OOTB compatibility with EXT4?
Edit: Maybe a alternative solution would be to drop Ntfs in favour of Ext4 and use something like Linux Reader to see your Linux stuff from Windows.

Axios I ran into this problem a while ago. I unfortunately don't remember how i fixed it, but what i do know is that Windows holds the NTFS krabby patty formula under lock and key so if you want a drive to work with Windows then always format the drive on Window else it'll cause problems.

I never tried to format drive to NTFS from Linux.
How do you mount NTFS drive on Solus? Have you tried NTFS-3G driver?

this forum user had the windows-not-seeing-ntfts thing going on but different reasons (steam issues) but had a strange (to me) fix. That forum user said in Win, chkdsk used to fix it but no longer does.

I will admit I did not see your exact problem will also confess I know little about win-linux communication channels.

When you say windows refuses to see them, do they register at all with disk manager and are unmountable?

Not specific to linux formatting the drive, but I did have one drive that showed in the bios but Win could not see even with wiping the drive and reformatting on a different computer.

There was some command line string that removed EVERYTHING from the drive and then it could be formatted successfully.

The best I remember was searching for Win won't format drive.

qsl What I figured out it was reverting to no drive letter all the time if I set
one then it would work.
Got no where this morning decided to wipe disk then I partition again
and guess what it now works fine with all my windows and linux.

So your guess good as mine what would have caused that.

Axios I've noted Win10 is very persnickety with drives (without really telling you what the problem is), and formatting and partitioning needs to be done by it or it causes problems. Win7 less so, but sometimes moving drives between the two causes 7 to require some finagling to get it to work (but doesn't require a full wipe like 10).

Also, drive orientation (even with the same make and model) matters to 10, with it marking several errors if it isn't happy.

Ya when I read last nite was surprise at the issues just between windows versions.
Actual I used win7 to Prep drive.
But it was a Win10 drive before.
Tested it again all my Winpe see it and installed Os are cool.
I got around 50 HDD from dawn of time with data to go through and its basically a scratch drive.
Know what I will be doing all winter..lol

MY normal routine is to test then wipe the setup But I think what caused the issue I setup with Win10
something I normally never do.

Shouldnt be any difference but seems their is that disk had win10 on it so may have been some left
overs my gut feeling.
