Solus Gnome - how to replace Nautilus file manager

after months and months without my main computer because of still unsolved 'Nvidia-Budgie-Kernel' misteries, I'm finally back to life thanks to this forum conversation:

I burned the ISO to the USB drive directly (gnome-disks). Yes, I upgraded from 4.5 to 4.7 without any problems.

It was really a big happiness few days ago after installing Solus 4.5 Gnome and upgrading it to the latest version.
Quickly, without paying attention to details, I installed Nemo and removed Nautilus - it resulted with non-bootable computer.
Consequently, I reinstalled Solus once again.
Already quite a long time Solus Budgie has Nemo, what is the default file manager in Solus Gnome 4.7 and upcoming 4.8?

I would be very grateful if somebody can help me with exact installation/post-installation steps how to replace Nautilus (nautilus filemanager actions installed with all dependencies) with Nemo file manager 🙂

I'm glad that your system is running well now, and that another post was able to help out.

Always be careful when removing software. You may have removed other components that depend on Nautilus, which caused the system to be unbootable. I'm glad you got that resolved. As Sebastian said, you can use Nemo or any other file manager you like without removing Nautilus.

We take the approach of keeping as close to defaults as possible on each edition. Since Nautilus is the default file manager by design on GNOME, we plan on keeping it as the default file manager for 4.7 and all future releases. If GNOME themselves were to change their default file manager, we would adopt that. We use what they use.

Yeah, that will be catastrophic (and you should've seen the list of to-be-removed packages). Here's what happens on my PC:

 sudo eopkg rm nautilus                           
[sudo] password for thomas:
The following list of packages will be removed
in the respective order to satisfy dependencies:
gdm gnome-desktop-branding gnome-shell gnome-session-shell xdg-desktop-portal-gnome nautilus

gdm is the display manager (which manages among other things the login screen after boot), and gnome-shell is the central part of the GNOME desktop, and the other packages aren't exactly optional either.

There is no need to uninstall nautilus. But after installing nemo you should run xdg-mime default nemo.desktop inode/directory in terminal to make nemo default file browser.

My machine is quite powerful. The spinning circle means that the OS is busy doing something. I already forgot how annoying this frequent occurrence was during the Budgie-Nautilus period. Now, after a long time, surprisingly it returned back again with Gnome-Nautilus aajjjaaaaa - and that's exactly why I want to switch to Nemo.
