  • anyone have any experience with Epson printers on Solus?

My 10 year old Brother printer is in death's door--too many low spots--too much money spent...

Shopping used printers right now since I don't trust brand new anything, tbh.

I'm liking Epson XP's and WF's series. Seeing a lot in my town used.
I know HP is the way to go here, but I'd like to know if anyone is having no scan/print problems at all as well as no headaches. Or headaches? Or any additional 2 cents? Thanks!

I got an Epson ET-8550. I use the driver for the earlier model for that one ET-7750. It's been more good than bad. When I did have issues printing wireless I think it was mostly down to it not liking how I tried to isolate it in its own vlan. With cable or via same wifi as my laptop printing has been all right. Scanning only works with cable attached.

So I think Epson can be at least decent, at least certain models. There's the epson-inkjet-printer-escpr package in the repos. You could install that and check with Cups if the device is available in the driver list.

Could also check via other more used distros forums like Ubuntu. If it works on one Linux with a cups driver and that driver is available in Solus repos it should be okay. The pain starts if there's third party drivers that are .deb or .rpm only (or if there's no Linux driver at all).

    Hello,

Personally, for Solus, I configured it first with my smartphone in wifi after installing the escpr driver and epsonscan. For the other distributions, Ubuntu, Linuxmint or Nixos (a bit harder lol), I haven't had any problems.

Solarmass was tempting to do so. still is tempting. the quality went to he** in 9 years, but maybe that is reasonable shelf life.

I bought a new D570 Canon today. Monochrome, with copier/scanner. It was the right price at the right time.

Allegedly Solus has the UEFRII (whatever) drivers which should do it. Doing partner/Windows computer right now, then mine later.

Even if Solus drivers do not work, Canon has Linux source support for this model (targz) with setup script.

      Why Canon?
HEWLETT PACKARD SUS ALERT: my first choice that I brought back and got my money back for was a small, slick HP monochrome. On the box it blatanly lies that this printer can be used with a USB-B cord. Nope. Demanded a wi-fi install. OK we did that. Last step before hitting finish it was REQUIRED to setup a SUBSCRIPTION and an ACCOUNT with HP before it would install the printer drivers in WIN11. We found this unreasonable for using a printer I paid cash for.

banger still no-go with the print drivers. still playing though.
Solus drivers don't work. Canon drivers can't be installed with script since dpkg/apt baked into install keeps failing. Can't find source (non rpm or deb) files yet....

brent Use the cups webinteface and setup it up that way I have kinda forgotten
but there is a thread here somewhere that I talked about it.
It will give you a list of connection options just select the one you want
That seems to be the easiest and most fool proof for some printers.
Dont need drivers from canon or nuttin.
All the new canons have the universal driver built in

Sheesh my brain is out to lunch today..lol

          This thread might help https://discuss.getsol.us/d/11246-canon-printer-prints-double-sided-upside-down/25

Axios Dont need drivers from canon or nuttin.
All the new canons have the universal driver built in

Solus furnishes them for some models and this particular model of mine has a driver package offered at Canon so I'm under the impression it needs a driver.
            @Sebastian

--to both, thanks, looks like this project will be all afternoon. I'm finding cups excruciating. I think I have to make a rule for 631 in ufw since its blocked in browsers, and amend fstab, what a mess. Will chase your links soon, thank you. this is going to be a bitch I can tell. all the easy stuff I exhausted 🙂

I initially wanted to reply that my Epson ML-1630 laser printer worked flawlessly on Solus. Then I discovered that this printer was actually a Samsung 🙈
When the toner cartridge was empty, I ditched it cause it wasn't impeccable anymore anyways.
I didn't by a new printer. Ever since, if I need something printed, I go to the drug store 2 minutes from my place where they have a kodak copy station where you can print photos and scan and print PDF documents.
So I prepare the document as PDF on my PC, and then transfer it with my smartphone via bluetooth or wifi to the copy station.
Sure, I pay 10 cents per A4 page, but don't have to worry about paper and cartridge, let alone driver installation.
I do have a scanner though.
If you print a lot, 10 cents per page is a bad deal, though.

brent You set it up with cups driverless ipp everywhere
                its that simple
                Make sure airscan is installed
You just got tell cups to use the built in printer driver (ipp everywhere)
(http://localhost:631) should bring up cups no problems shouldnt have to change a thing
Under (system tools) its called (manage printing) from the budgie menu

Just tell cups find printer then select options and save

                  Axios
If I go the cups route, for the first time in my life, does that technically make my usb printer a network printer now?

brent No you should be able to set it either way usb or network what ever you want
If you tell cups to find it should be selected however you got it hooked up otherwise you got do it manual.
It will find it then you tell it what driver to use and some other options then save

                    Did I understand that wrong?

Axios thanks axios, cant work on this for a couple hrs. appreciate your help. usb only my goal

brent Ah np just holler I will keep and eye out.
Cups is Kinda intimidating the first time but once it clicks its easy.

                        brent

There are Solus drivers but need a maintainer there is an issue for it. I had to set IPP Everywhere for my Canon as couldn't get USB to work.

banger You jogged my memory I couldnt get USB to work either on my canon
But thats when I first got it might try it again.

                          Glad you said something. Thanks
